Blogging in the classroom

Being new to blogging, I was wondering just how could I use this in the first grade classroom?  Can first graders even use the computer to blog?  I think so!  There might be some training and practice, but I think it can be done.  I think for the classroom it could be used for journal writing.  The teacher could list a prompt and the students could respond.  I also think it could be use for a creative writing project.  The teacher again could start a story and each student could contribute their ideas to the story.  These were just a few that quickly popped into my head.  I am sure I can come up with several more.  Maybe some type of discussion.  This probably would be better with older students.  I am not sure.  I am still learning so much with teaching and technology!! Blogging could also probably be done with parents, too.  I am not sure how I would handle it but I could probably get information from others on how to use blogging with parents.

  1. I think that you would be amazed at what younger children are able to do on the computers! My 4 year old already knows about her teenage sister's iPod & wants one! She uses my Kindle already and loves to use my laptop. It just makes me wonder what new technologies she will use as an adult!

  2. I like the idea of having a blog for parents. I think it would be a nice addition instead of the notes home that can get lost in the bottom of a bookbag.

  3. I agree - a blog could work well with parent/teacher communication.

It has been a long time since I have had any experience with 1st graders (20 years), but the one thing I do remember is the anxiety over the weekly spelling words - I think that a blog could be used to teach the weekly spelling words.

  4. Blogs would be a great way to introduce typing to the first graders. The earlier they begin to locate the keys, the better off they are!

  5. I know of some teachers in the primary grades that use a blog for communicating with parents. One teacher specifically has said it's been great but challenging to get all parents on board and check it often enough. However, you may be able to build up to having the first graders use the blog as well. They could post comments and their parents could see this as well. I think first graders are capable of this tool, but like you mentioned, you would just need to teach them in simple steps and have them practice. I was surprised to hear that many children/teens are already using and maintaining blogs of their own. That is why continuing education for teachers is so important in order to keep up with the progression of technology and educational research.

  6. Using blogging to teach typing to your students is a good idea! My fourth graders could have used that extra practice in first grade!
